As the only actively fielded version of STANAG 4586, Edition 2 offers the end user the greatest degree of real world interoperability. The release by NATO of STANAG 4586 Edition 2, Amendment 2 as a public document available to all is likely to further increase the number of systems compliant with this standard and truly maximize the interoperability amongst these systems. InnUVative Systems is actively involved with improving this document and will keep the software up-to-date, even as modifications roll out so that you always have a VSM or translation module that can meet your customers’ latest needs.
STANAG 4586 Edition 3 document not currently available.
In 1999, a NATO Working Group was established to define a standard to meet the goals of interoperability between UAV assets. At that time the working group represented 8 nations and representatives from more than 20 different companies. There are now more than 15 nations.
STANAG 4586 Edition 1 was completed in 2003 and ratified by the member countries by 2004.
STANAG 4586 Edition 2 has evolved from lessons learned during implementations of Edition 1 and has ratified an Edition 2, Amendment 2. Document available here.
STANAG 4586 is the de-facto standard for many NATO UAV procurements, but the standard is still undergoing significant changes that are not backwards compatible.
STANAG 4586 Primer
Vehicle Specific Modules (VSMs)
In STANAG 4586, Vehicle Specific Modules (VSMs) are used to both translate the native vehicle protocol to STANAG-4586 messages and to support the graphical interfaces needed for vehicle-specific functionality (e.g. initialization).
The VSM is really a System Specific Module (SSM) as it applies to sensors, datalinks and other systems as well. This terminology is currently being changed in STANAG 4586.
InnUVative Systems has developed a code base that includes all of the STANAG-4586 message set and protocol logic. Leveraging this existing knowledge and code allows rapid, low risk development of VSMs for any system requiring STANAG-4586 compliance.
For Sensors and Datalinks
A sensor or datalink manufacturer can enhance their product saleability to an unmanned vehicle system developer or operator by including a STANAG-4586 compliant VSM with their product. This will greatly reduce the cost and risk of integration into a STANAG-4586 compliant system, giving a competitive advantage over other products.
InnUVative Systems' ability to rapidly develop VSMs can provide you with this distinguishing difference.
